American
Indian
Many collectors consider the native American, or "Indian" portrait pass to be the most spectacular of the six types. The image depicts a warrior of stature wearing an embroidered shirt and impressive war bonnet made of up feathers that would have been awarded by the tribe for acts of bravery or sacrifice. The attire suggests a chief from the Midwestern planes, perhaps Sioux, or Kiowa. Like the other three original portrait tickets of Columbus, Washington, and Lincoln, this pass was printed twice. The first, actually sent out a month
before the fair gates opened, bore no red "A" between the
seal and the image. A later printing of the same pass bore the "A."
The ultra detailed reverse is printed in a light red with a touch of
orange. If you could only have one of the six Souviner Portrait tickets,
this might be it. |

An excellent example of an "A"
type, there were only about half the number of "A"s printed
as the original, so they are generally more valuable than the originals,
though the graphics are the same. On this, as on all examples from any
type, you will find faint ink spots here and there in the margins and
fields from the printing process. Found on every pass, they have no
effect on collectible value or pricing. |
